Navigating a Family Crisis
Author and Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Jennifer S. Ripley, helps us understand the power of compassion and care during a family crisis.
The work of parenting is essential not only for the health of children but also for the health of society. Additionally, we know that the well-being of parents and caregivers is directly linked to the well-being of their children. The stresses parents and caregivers have today are being passed to children in direct and indirect ways, impacting families and communities across America. Yet in modern society, parenting is often portrayed as a less important, less valued pursuit. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The Power of Compassion and Care
Raising children is sacred work. It should matter to all of us.
And the health and well-being of those caring for our
children should also matter to us.
—Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy
In “Parents Under Pressure,” the Surgeon General’s 2024 Advisory on the Mental Health & Well-Being of Parents, we read of the urgency of helping families navigate the multitude of complex issues they face in this “intensifying culture of comparison”2 with unrealistic expectations around the milestones, parenting strategies, achievements and status symbols that kids and parents must pursue.”3
As I read through this report, highlighting and silently praying, my passion for supporting mothers grew stronger and stronger.
One primary way I can do that is through my podcast, which brings thought leaders and family experts to our community table. Here, we can listen, learn, and lead with wisdom and clarity.
In Episode 309, “Navigating a Family Crisis with Compassion and Care,” author and licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Jennifer S. Ripley shares from her new book, “Ministering to Families in Crisis: The Essential Guide for Nurturing Mental and Emotional Health.”4 Jennifer and her team of co-authors address current issues families face. Their combined years of experience equip us to help our families and those we meet in our spheres of influence.
A Little Q&A

Jennifer begins the book and our conversation by discussing Rembrandt’s artwork, The Storm on the Sea of Galilee. I invite you to spend time in Visio Divina with this beautiful painting.
Jennifer shares, “The heart of Christ’s teachings lies in love and compassion. We have a sacred duty to extend compassionate care to those navigating the turbulent seas of family crisis.” What might this look like as we help families in need?
